Harley Earl (right) was a pioneer in the world of automobile styling. He was instrumental in transforming the automobile from an exclusively engineering endeavor, introducing the concept that appearance should be part of the package. He was the head of the "Art and Colour" division at GM when it was first formed in 1927, which was the start of the concept that aesthetic design was important. Harley's early work included the 1938 Buick Y-Job; he was also an early supporter of Project Opel which became the Corvette.
Earl retired in 1958 but stayed on with GM as a consultant and in 1963 GM gave him this personalized 1963 Corvette Sting Ray which was modified by the GM design staff. He drove it regularly for two years and then sold it to a Army veteran. It's history goes blank from there to 1973 when a racing group purchased it without any real idea as to it's history. A bit of research uncovered its origins and it was restored to the high standard seen here.
Mr. Earl's special Corvette was originally equipped with a fuel injected motor but was replaced with this less brutal 300 hp carbureted version. Note the air conditioning; this was a rare option in 1963, with only 278 (1.29%) of 1963 Corvettes so equipped.
